Section 3: Simile

A simile is a comparison of two seemingly different things using the word 'like' or 'as'. Read the passage below and then respond to its effect on the reader, using the questions as a guide.
He fell with his leg twisted under him, and could hear the crack of bone...It was as if a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, slicing through each nerve with a hot blade.
  • What are the two things being compared?
  • What is the effect of the simile?
  • Why might an author choose to use this literary device?

  1. I think that the 2 things being compared are the crack of a bone and slicing through each nerve with a hot blade. A simile gets people thinking about reality and how something would be if it were real. An author would use this device to keep the readers interested by saying "I wonder if that's true or possible", it also keeps audience or readers in deep thought.

  2. It makes me think of strong guys with and ax splitting big logs of wood - and you sure would not want that ax or hatchet to land on you! OUCH! Slicing also gives the idea of many things being cut and the heat just adds to the pain on each "slice". I'm sure she used all this figurative language to more precisely describe and also magnify the pain in the reader's mind.
