Section 1: Allusion

Now that you have read the first section of the novel, you have been introduced to the main characters, Jonas. The name Jonas is a variation of the name Jonah. In the Bible, the prophet Jonah was commissioned by God to proclaim judgement on a sinful city. Why might Lois Lowry have chosen this name?

  1. Firstly i am a christian so i have heard of Jonah a number of times. Jonah was considered a quite important man for delivering such a powerful message. Secondly, I do think that so far Jonas is a very important character for i find him considered as a quite unique person. Finally there is a possibility of Jonas getting a very important place in the community, just like Jonah been given a task. Also in the bible first Jonah does not agree, so maybe Jonas may not be very willing to do all that is ment to be done for his assignment: but may make the right decision in the end.

  2. I think that Lois Lowry has chosen the name Jonas because he
might be given the assignment of helping or informing people or even showing them stuff they have not known.

  5. In the Bible, the prophet Jonas was commissioned by the LORD to proclaim judgement upon a sinful city. This was in order for him to save and rescue the sity. therefore, I believe that Louis Lowry has chosenJonas as the name of the main characterbecause Jonas is to be the Saver, of his community. He is to be the Giver and through his new powers, he shall change his own community.

I think that Lois Lowry has chosen the name Jonas the name Jonah comes from the bible, Jonah was a man given an assignment by god but ignored the assignment and ran away, that ios why i think that Jonas will be given an assignment he will not like or will be scared and will not do his assignment in the beggining but later he might to his assignment

  9. Oh my what a great discussion! The prophet Jonah in the Bible like all the other prophets were there to give God's message to the people - they were a kind of mediator between God and humans. As the new Giver, Jonas will give messages and guidance to the community from the past memories..? Also the Biblical Jonah was NOT happy about God's assignment for him at first and he ran away from it! Will Jonas run away and "fail" as the new Receiver? HMMMMMMM

  10. I think Lois Lowrey chose the name Jonas because the prophet played an important role in making people believe in the right thing and maybe Jonas will do the same. Anyone have any ideas about Gabe?

  11. To my knowledge, Jonah in the Bible was a prophet whom God called upon to go and declare judgment on a sinful city. This could imply that Jonas, in the book, is the main character who might tell his Utopian community about how the world that they live in is “artificial” and everything is made perfect for them. Jonas might also tell his community how the world used to be, full of pain, colour, differences between skin colour etc.
